I got a message on the Geek Alabama Facebook page, and I thought it was a good thing to share! Michelle Deese Bain lives in Anniston and is active in community theatre, Relay for Life, and she coaches the cheerleaders at The Donoho School. Michelle used to love going to the tanning bed, she went to be tanned often and did it for years. But, then something bad happened from those sessions at the tanning bed.
Michelle saw a strange growth on her back and went to the dermatologist. After one look she was rushed over to a pathologist for tests. The next day, she got the call that the growth was indeed a malignant melanoma, or cancer. And soon, the growth and tissue around the growth was removed. Michelle has a scar to remind those about the dangers of tanning beds. And thankfully, she is cancer free!
Today, Michelle is an advocate for protecting yourself from the dangers of the sun with sunscreen. She goes to local schools to talk about the dangers of skin cancer. And you can find her at outdoor events giving out sunscreen. If Michelle did not catch the growth on her back, she would probably still be tanning today! Michelle wants everyone to know that melanoma is preventable. And if you don’t take care of your skin now, it will eventually catch up with you.
She has started a grassroots melanoma awareness campaign called Michelle Melanoma Army. And she has made it her mission to educate others on the dangers of too much sun exposure. She has spoken before her state legislature in efforts to ban teen tanning bed use, as well as the Alabama State Cancer Rally Day, appeared on local television segments, been featured in several newspaper, social media outlets and magazine publications, and has spoken at numerous schools and health fairs.
