Welcome to the Roadscapes Wednesday segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Roadscapes Wednesday will feature roads and infrastructure related topics. Geek Alabama Editor / Publisher Nathan Young is often called the “road geek” for a good reason, Nathan loves roads and loves talking about roads!
Floyd Hill looks like a short stretch of mountain interstate, but it has become one of the most fragile points on Colorado’s main route into the Rockies. This video breaks down why that happened, how Interstate 70 became such an important corridor in the first place, and why fixing this section has turned into one of the most technically demanding highway projects in the region.
The rebuild is not just about adding a lane. It includes major new bridges, a new highway alignment cut into the mountainside, frontage-road and interchange upgrades, and a long list of safety and operational improvements designed to reduce congestion, crashes, and corridor-wide breakdowns. More than anything, this project shows what it takes to rebuild a weak point in a live mountain corridor where the terrain, the traffic, and the stakes all make every decision harder.
