When I thought about writing this post, I thought about the Eminem song “Lose Yourself.” The song starts with:
Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?
And I’m afraid Democrats here in Alabama are going to fail to see the opportunity and just let it slip.
It was a matter of time here in Alabama, but the US Supreme Court is allowing the state of Alabama to use an older Congressional map that the Alabama Legislature approved.
This older map splits South Alabama between two different Congressional districts. And the way the map was drawn, both of these districts are heavily Republican.
Keep in mind, parts of these two districts have heavy Democrat areas, which are mostly African-American voters.
And that’s the point, Republicans here in Alabama are celebrating the decision from the US Supreme Court. And many Republicans are now calling to redraw all the Congressional districts in Alabama so Democrats cannot win ever again.
I would not be surprised within the next couple weeks that another special session is called to accomplish this. You have to know there are Republican groups here in Alabama already working on redrawing not only US House Maps, but also State Senate maps, and State House maps, to get as many Democrats out as possible.
And it would not shock me if another special session was called to approve these maps that would lock Democrats out of Alabama forever. If it does not happen now, it will certainly happen in early 2027 during the next regular session.
That has been the goal of Republicans ever since the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Back then, today’s Republicans were yesterday’s Democrats. After the Civil Rights Movement Act and the Voter Rights Act was passed. Democrats back then switched to being Republicans today. And that is where a lot of racist, hateful, bigoted, awful people exist today.
My question now for the Democrats, what are they going to do differently to attract voters?
Because in today’s political environment, what Democrats have been doing to try to get out the vote will not work anymore.
Democrats here in Alabama have been doing things like protesting, filling out and mailing out postcards, calling and texting people, and knocking on people’s doors.
But I’m afraid, all of this will not work anymore.
Because there is only one move Democrats can do here in Alabama.
You must get Republicans to vote for Democrats in Alabama!
That’s it, that’s the only move you got.
You cannot get every Democrat here in Alabama to turn out to vote and include all the independent voters voting for Democrats and still hope to win.
You cannot hope people in Alabama will not vote straight party ticket or split their ticket.
You must attract Republicans!
And Democrats here in Alabama don’t know how to do that.
I have been saying for a while now that Democrats here in Alabama must do things differently to attract voters.
Things like protesting or mailing out postcards does not work anymore.
Democrats need to go out to places where Republican voters go.
Things like religious events.
Things like high school and college football games.
Things like hunting and fishing.
Things like community events.
Things like community sporting events
I can keep naming things here. The point is Democrats can no longer rely on the court system to get their way, those days are over.
Republicans in Alabama have huge money advantages, have huge media advantages, have huge followers, and are well organized.
Democrats in Alabama are looking around with their hands up in the air and wondering how to attract voters.
Things are only going to get worse for Democrats here in Alabama. Liberal organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center are already under federal and state investigation and may not survive.
And if Tommy Tuberville gets elected governor, you know he will order the state of Alabama to go after other Democrat organizations.
And this time Democrats will not have the court system to stop them.
And there will be a lot fewer Democrats serving in government in Alabama from everywhere including the state legislature, county commissions, city councils, and every elected position in this state. Because Republicans are going to make sure every map in this state is redrawn to their advantage.
So what will it be Democrats?
Continue with the status quo and hope for the best, or try something new?
To sum up “Lose Yourself.”
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
