Welcome to the Science Mondays segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Science Mondays will feature stuff from the world of science and science related content. Our goal here at Geek Alabama is to hopefully have you learn something useful and fulfilling. Science is a geek’s best friend, and we love featuring science content here at Geek Alabama.
The video explains that the Olympic Games aren’t becoming harder to host by chance, but because climate change is steadily eroding the conditions they depend on. Rising temperatures are making reliable winter weather rarer, forcing host cities to rely heavily on artificial snow, water, and energy. Fewer cities can now meet the Olympic requirements without major environmental and financial strain, shrinking the pool of viable hosts.
Using climate models and historical weather data, the video estimates how many decades traditional Olympic locations can continue hosting before conditions become unworkable. It concludes that without rapid emissions cuts or major changes to how the Games are organized, the Olympics face a future with far fewer possible hosts.
