Introducing Time Signature: An Animated Musical Short Film
Hi, I’m Matthew A. Cherry, director of the Oscar-winning animated short Hair Love and co-author of the New York Times bestselling picture book of the same name. In 2017, we launched Hair Love right here on Kickstarter with a vision to tell a personal, culturally specific story that hadn’t yet been greenlit by the industry — but was greenlit by the people. Thanks to your incredible support, that short film went all the way to the Academy Awards and helped open doors for more authentic Black stories in animation.
Now, I’m returning to animation with a brand-new project that’s just as personal — and this time, it’s a musical.
What Is Time Signature?
Time Signature is a 2D animated musical short film, and a proof of concept for a future feature, that blends magical realism, time travel, and original music to explore identity, legacy, and creative inheritance.
The story follows Melody, a teenage prodigy preparing for a prestigious music school audition — an opportunity her pragmatic mother refuses to support. Struggling with writer’s block, Melody decides to clean out the attic and discovers an unfinished piece of sheet music tucked inside her late grandmother’s piano. The piano itself seems to have magical qualities. The sheet is signed by her grandmother, but the other signatures are faded and unreadable. When she plays the piece, Melody is pulled into a series of time loops that transport her through defining musical moments in her family’s past.
Along the way, she encounters younger versions of her mother and grandmother — witnessing the dreams they set aside, the talents they hid, and the emotional truths they never fully expressed. Through this journey, Melody begins to understand not only where she comes from, but how to finish the song and shape her own future.
