Introducing ‘She Smiled, Just a Little’. A gentle, heartfelt story about finding home, friendship and a sense of belonging.

About The Book, She Smiled, Just a Little is a heartfelt picture book created to support children navigating big feelings, new beginnings, and the tender journey toward feeling safe and seen. While it offers comfort and representation for children in foster care or experiencing change, its message is universal: love, trust, and belonging grow in small, quiet moments.

Told through the eyes of Lulu—a bear cub entering a new home—this story invites all children to explore empathy, emotional awareness, and the power of connection. Whether read at home, in classrooms, or in therapeutic settings, it’s a valuable tool for building emotional literacy and understanding the many ways families can look and feel.

The first in a planned series exploring the complexities of out-of-home care, She Smiled, Just a Little helps children recognize that every feeling matters, and that healing doesn’t have to happen all at once—it begins with a little safety, a little kindness… and maybe, just a little smile.

Lulu arrives at a new home with a small red bag, a few quiet wishes, and a teddy named Bee. She’s not sure what to expect—and she’s not ready to smile. Not yet.

But sometimes, feeling safe begins slowly:
A bedtime story.
A shared drawing.
A tower built, block by block.

Through small, everyday moments of kindness, Lulu starts to feel like she belongs. And as her world begins to open, so does her heart.

She Smiled, Just a Little is a tender story about bravery, family, and the moments that help a child feel safe. Whether facing change, displacement, or big emotions, Lulu’s journey reminds us that settling in takes time—and that every child deserves the space to get there in their own way.
