Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

“The Bouquet” is a completely original, handmade, colourful, wordless children’s book. It’s a 32 page picture book for 2-4 year olds about a small boy’s adventure between his house and garden, using hand cut 3D collage and bold, vibrant colour. From the start of his day inside, to the adventures he has outside, the boy plays and observes colourful flora and fauna in his urban garden, with the story culminating with him arriving back to his mother with an eclectic bouquet and a hug.

”My aim for the illustrations is to make this a delightful treasure hunt for this not-yet literate age group, creating a playful, visual adventure which brings pleasure, colour and new discoveries with each encounter, either alone (where they can ‘read’ it by themselves) or to enjoy it alongside older readers, building vocabulary (in any language) as they go. With this simple story, I hope to create a quiet little meditation on the joys of observation and daily life.”

As a professional artist for her entire life, Shelley has always wanted to create an illustrated children’s book. Over the course of the last two years, after hundreds of hours of creative paper cutting, she has finished what we hope will become a children’s classic, and you can see the entire finished creation as a “flip-book” on Shelley’s website !

The book also has vertical half pages, which represent doors inside the house so the reader turns the page (door), and moves into the next room, or onto the next adventure in the garden. Shelley has built in the object-like aspect of a book, making it like a 3D house in the reader’s hands, inviting the reader into the house and out into the garden. “I want this to be a love letter to the book as an object; for young hands to LOVE the experience of books.”

Our Kickstarter campaign aims to raise enough funds to print at least 100 Hard-Back First Edition books of “The Bouquet”, of which the first 50 will be signed by Shelley, for each $95 pledge. As well as being signed by the artist, other rewards for early pledges include a signed 8″ x 10″ print of a single page from the book, and two postcards with images from the book. The remaining 50 will receive an un-signed First edition. And with luck, if the campaign is successful, later pledges will also receive a First Edition.

The funds raised will allow for a small production run of self-published books, plus help with marketing and promotion with the ultimate aim of finding a Tier 1 Publisher to take on Global Distribution.

As of December 17th, this project has raised $3,000 of their $3,515 goal. This project has 30 days left to raise the $3,515 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $39, you will get one limited first edition.  For a pledge of $67, you will get one signed first edition.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thebouquet/the-bouquet-by-shelley-davies?
