When I watched the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, I was pleased to see the amazing arts and culture that France does. Of course, many of the right wingers thought differently. And even today, they are still complaining about the opening ceremony being woke and unchristian.
So let’s set some things straight about the opening ceremony.
First off, I loved the part of the opening ceremony where there was a headless Queen Marie Antoinette and French metal band Gojira.
Guess what, it Is French history that she was beheaded, and it really was not that gruesome and it was all costuming after all. The metal band also rocked it as well.
Then we get to the fashion show portion of the opening ceremony. There was a part of that show where some are arguing that a drag show was depicting The Last Supper. And as we have found out, that was not true.
The Last Supper scene was actually supposed to represent the Greek Bacchanalia. And the blue man was supposed to represent Dionysus, the Greek god of wine.
Also, the scenes of the metal horse and figure going up and down the river was supposed to represent Sequana, the Goddess of the Seine River. Her presence was intended to symbolize the Olympic spirit and the river where the procession took place.
So the opening ceremony represented actual Greek history in France, but according to many Christians and right Wingers, the ceremony was distasteful, evil, horrible, and wrong.
It’s gotten so bad several of the performers featured during the opening ceremony are now getting threats.
And this is what the Christian right wants. They don’t want anyone to learn about real history. They only want people to learn about history that’s in the Bible.
Forget all that Greek history stuff, the only history that should matter is stuff that you can read in the Bible that many times is not true.
It’s ridiculous that so many right wingers got riled up over art in history.
Greek history, freak out!
The statue of David, freak out!
French life and culture, freak out!
Celebrating LGBTQ culture, freak out!
Learning about black history, freak out!
Learning about the history of Native Americans, freak out!
Basically, any history that does not conform to a narrow-minded right-wing Christian view should never see the light of day.
And with the controversy surrounding the Paris opening ceremonies. You have to wonder what the opening ceremony for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic games will be like?
If the Christian right Wingers get their way, it will be the most boring Opening Ceremonies in Olympic history.
Guess what, it’s okay to learn about art, culture, and actual history!
It’s not going to make your life miserable!
