Welcome to the Roadscapes Wednesday segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Roadscapes Wednesday will feature roads and infrastructure related topics. Geek Alabama Editor / Publisher Nathan Young is often called the “road geek” for a good reason, Nathan loves roads and loves talking about roads!

The dramatic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after it was struck by a massive container ship, led to the tragic loss of six maintenance workers. This incident highlights the severe infrastructure problems in the U.S., with over 42,000 bridges in poor condition. The economic impact is significant, with the Port of Baltimore’s closure costing the local economy $15 million daily and affecting 155,000 jobs.

In this video we examine the urgent need for infrastructure investment, as many U.S. bridges are over 70 years old and face serious structural issues. Despite President Joe Biden’s 2021 infrastructure bill allocating $40 billion for bridge repairs, the American Road and Transport Builders Association estimates that fixing all of America’s bridges would cost over $319 billion.

We discuss the immediate and long-term consequences of the bridge collapse, the state of U.S. infrastructure, and the critical need for maintenance and investment to prevent future disasters and ensure public safety and economic stability.
