OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage follows activist-artist Whitney Bradshaw as she travels the post-Roe United States with OUTCRY, a participatory art project in which she leads women in group scream sessions, photographing them mid-scream to create a collective portrait of resistance, motivate political action, and build feminist solidarity through radical empathy.
Why we’re making this film:
Women’s voices are too often silenced. We are told that we are too much: too angry, too sad, too loud, too serious. We feel too much, want too much — are too demanding or not assertive enough. We are turned against each other. We are told to just shut up and accept the world as it is. Even privately we may be afraid of our own voices, our own rage.
Our film presents a radically hopeful alternative. OUTCRY scream sessions give women, non-binary, and genderqueer people permission and a safe space to be LOUD. Participants share stories they’ve never told anyone; some are screaming for the first time ever. And the resulting photographs — exhibited in floor-to-ceiling grids or carried as larger-than-life portraits at protests — present women’s rage, sorrow, and joy without regard to society’s expectations. Teeth bared, eyes squeezed shut or defiantly open, they are beautiful in a profoundly unexpected and moving way.
As restrictions on reproductive choice and LGBTQ+ rights spread around the nation in a backlash of fear and repression, OUTCRY brings transformation, amplifying women’s voices with an unflinching belief in their power to make change. As we enter yet another critical election year, OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage aims to motivate Americans to use their voices to vote for women’s rights in 2024 — and will live on as a portrait of feminist power in action.
As of January 29th, this project has raised $2,500 of their $25,000 goal. This project has 40 days left to raise the $25,000 or it will not be funded.
