Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment! Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others. The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal. Please enjoy today’s featured project!

The Uncounted, loosely based on my own family history, is the first of three stories about a family who over three generations suffer from mental illness. The first story begins in the far west of Ireland in 1901 on the day of a national census. When a census taker arrives, his presence sends the family into an anxious state as they have hidden a family member. The sounds the census taker hears create a puzzle about how to count or not count, asking is that from a human or an animal?
The family masks the presence of the hidden person. Fused with magical realism and reality, the difficulty of the treatment of mental illness at that time is revealed. We see echos of the treatment of mental illness today. The animation and live footage create a unique and sympathetic portrayal of mental illness. The project will continue with two more generations of the same family and how treatment has changed. The final generation ends in the present.
The Uncounted is a film with with live footage and animation. The project has completed most of the animation, the live footage and most of the voice recordings. The live footage and the voices were done in Ireland. The complex process of color rendering and post production lie ahead. The 2D hand drawn animation will be finished using computer based post production tools. In addition to this, a sound designer, a composer, and a final mix lie ahead. A big part of the post production, which means the characters and animals will be treated with a degree of color so they are not transparent.
These items make up the bulk of what the Kickstarter campaign is hoping to fund. Thus far I have worked with exceptional talent and support. I am asking you to support this film and the small talented staff supporting the making of this film. That the film is about schizophrenia suggests that your support may help with research into solving this terrible affliction. It also aims to heal the complex relationships families have with mentally ill members. This was the hardest part for my family to understand. Looking back I see the long history of this illness in my family. The completion of The Uncounted will be the completion of the next two generations showing an arc of the disease in one family.

As of August 23rd, this project has raised $25,300 of their $27,200 goal. This project has 3 days left to raise the $27,200 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $25, you will get two postcards. For a pledge of $50, you will get five postcards. To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thecounted/the-uncounted?
