Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Mighty Miss Maya – Say Hello is a story about Maya and her best pal, Abby, the Goldendoodle, best friends who love to go on adventures. But it seems like every time they are out, they face pesky questions and second looks about Abby’s missing paw. When the stares and questions begin to get Abby down, Maya decides it’s time to step in and take action.

This book has vibrant illustrations and silly rhymes that will make your kids smile and laugh, just like book one in the series, Mighty Miss Maya – See it, Then be it. It’s also a book that will give ALL kids a better understanding of how the words we say and the words we hear impact those around us.

Why are we so passionate about writing this book series?

Disability representation in books (and all media) is important to us. It’s at the core of everything we do.

But more than just simply representing disabled people in books and media, it’s equally important to us HOW disabled people get represented in media. When creating our stories and illustrations, it’s essential that Maya, and kids with similar disabilities, see themselves as they truly are, people living their lives.

We work hard not to feed into stereotypes or tropes of disabled people. Our characters aren’t helpless; they aren’t angels, and they aren’t tools to teach others. They are complex. They are fun. They get mad. They solve problems. They have many emotions and experiences, just like any other child.

As of April 10th, this project has raised $15,700 of their $16,000 goal. This project has 5 days left to raise the $16,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $15, you will get one plush.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one signed book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightymissmaya/mighty-miss-maya-say-hello?
