Crowdsourcing Mornings: Forgotten Female Fiddlers Of Scania

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

We are Anna Rynefors & Miriam Andersén and we´ve been running a musical project called Kvinnolåt – “Women´s tune”, or “sound” – since 2015. Our focus has been looking for the forgotten women in music history, from the women skalds of the Viking Age to the female fiddlers of olden days. We love old traditions and the folk music of our region Scania, the southernmost tip of Sweden in Scandinavia (incidentally named after Scania).

For the last five years we´ve been trying to find the women who came before us. Digging in archives and records, making interviews, we´ve managed to find the singing and fiddle playing mothers, sisters and daughters that have held the tradition alive by handing on the tunes to their sons who got recognised for it throughout music history getting all the attention in books and papers.

Now we want to give these women their rightful place in the music history books by recording an album with their music. The full-length CD will be called “Skånska Spelkvinnor / Forgotten Female Fiddlers” and feature traditional Nordic music played, sung or composed by women in Sweden’s most southern region, Skåne/Scania. In addition to the traditional tunes, the album will also contain a couple of our own original compositions in traditional style. When we play together on our instruments – the harp, Nyckelharpa, Swedish bagpipe, flute and clog fiddle – the music makes us feel a connection to the women before us.

As of November 17th, this project has raised $5,000 of their $4,762 goal. This project has 1 days left to raise as much as it can.  For a pledge of $10, you will get a digital album download.  For a pledge of $20, you will get an autographed CD.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/femalefiddlers/forgotten-female-fiddlers-of-scania?
