Crowdsourcing Mornings: The Source Family Scrapbook

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

FAMILY: THE SOURCE FAMILY SCRAPBOOK provides an immersive view into the public and private world of the Southern California occult commune The Brotherhood of the Source. Edited by Isis Aquarian, Charlie Kitchings, and Jodi Wille, this lavishly illustrated book reproduces 200 original scrapbook pages assembled by family historian Isis Aquarian from 1972-1977, documenting the group’s dramatic rise and fall, from their time living together in the Hollywood Hills operating their wildly popular Source vegetarian restaurant on the Sunset Strip to their exodus to Hawaii and San Francisco as the group began to unravel.

Copious unpublished photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, manifestos, album art and flyers, augmented by descriptive captions, reveal the Source Family’s astonishing trajectory, from controversial leader Father Yod’s spiritual awakening to the group’s wild musical and social experimentations, to the provocations that led to the group’s paradise lost. These pages provide a revelatory, firsthand view into the widely misunderstood phenomenon of new religious movements and cults of the 1960s and 70s.

In order to produce the beautiful objects you will receive as a backer at such an accessible price we need funds for printing and binding a large run. We aim to print at least 3000 copies, and our goal reflects the production costs for this amount, but the more pledges we get here the more we can print! As an established (although relatively young) publishing company we already have storage and distribution methods streamlined which will make for a seamless experience for our backers.

We also plan to spread the word of this crucial legacy as far and wide as we can. We need your help in bringing this fascinating world into the light so please tell your friends about The Source Family Scrapbook! They will no doubt be as happy to discover this work as we have been.

As of May 11th, this project has raised $14,000 of their $50,000 goal. This project has 28 days left to raise the $50,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $50, you will get one book.  For a pledge of $90, you will get one book and art print.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
