Crowdsourcing Mornings: The Ride

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

The Ride is an animated interpretation of an oral history about a young girl’s first experience with the aftermath of a lynching during a trip to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1933. This larger-than-life tale of American terror is scaled to a child’s point of view from the backseat of her uncle’s car. Cotton fields become clouds, trees become storytellers, and a horrific discovery leaves an indelible mark.

The Look

The film will be rendered in a hybrid style consisting of 2D hand-drawn, printed, and 3D computer-modeled characters and graphic elements in nineteenth- and twentieth-century styles.

The Sound

The Ride’s beautiful and haunting soundscape consists of Dr. Adelaide Sanford’s eloquent voice, abstract sound design, and a score composed of brass and percussive instruments and found objects.

The Feel

The architecture is also a storyteller. For example, when the widow finds out that her husband has been lynched, death literally destroys a family structure.

The forest tells the story about the lynching victims in a visceral way. Bark becomes burnt skin, broken branches become broken bones, and sap becomes spilled blood.

We are present at a lynching—a terrorist act organized as a social event—by using surreal and allegorical imagery.

As of February 9th, this project has raised $6,000 of their $30,000 goal. This project has 22 days left to raise the $30,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $15, you will get a virtual gallery.  For a pledge of $25, you will get a virtual screening of the animatic.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1465312652/the-ride-0?
