So this week on Animation Monday I am going to talk about the poor attempt to bring back one of the most beloved video game characters, Pac-Man. Pac-Man And The Ghostly Adventures premiered on Disney XD and so far I have not really enjoyed it. The series is an American-Candidan produced computer-animated television series in production by 41 Entertainment for Disney XD. The first thing I really don’t like is the opening sequence to the show. It sounds like a young kid made it.
The show follows Pac-Man, who along with his friends Cylindria and Spiral helps protect Pac-World from the threat of Ghosts. After watching a few episodes for this post, I say this show is poorly written. Many other people on the internet agrees with that statement. The plot in each episode is stale and very predictable. The only good thing about this series is the animation. I thought the animation, although computer animated, was pretty good.
About the plot, sure I know this is a kids show. But in the animation world today, many kids shows like My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Phineas and Ferb, and Adventure Time has huge adult followings. The writers and animators of all kids shows not only needs to make a show great for kids, they need to make them so adults will enjoy them as well. Pac-Man And The Ghostly Adventures will probably make kids happy, but adults will find the show boring and lackluster.
The show was partly created because a video game from the show titled Pac-Man And The Ghostly Adventures will be out later this year. So far, the critics have criticized the game and are saying Pac-Man should not have been brought back to create something like this. For a 1980’s video game icon, these hurtful words are like kids being forced to watch violent and graphic shows. Parents know it’s wrong to have kids watch violent stuff. Namco Bandai Games should have thought twice before bringing Pac-Man back in a bad and poor way.
Bringing back Pac-Man this way has done very poorly. If the creators of this cartoon and game could not do better, they should have left Pac-Man alone. Sometimes, leaving a classic video game character alone is the best thing to do. If I want my Pac-Man fix, I am going to play online and enjoy!
