The 2022 hurricane season was initially quiet, uneventful, even almost forgettable. Week after week, Floridians watched the tropics without flinching, settling into that dangerous comfort that comes from a season with much lower than expected activity. This false sense of security, however, would be violently ripped away.
In late September 2022, Hurricane Ian would slam directly into Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 4 behemoth. Ian would permanently reshape Southwest Florida, and go on to carve a legacy as the costliest hurricane in Florida’s history. Yet, for so many, Ian’s story is more than just the story of another monstrous storm wreaking havoc on the Sunshine State, and for myself, Ian’s story is deeply personal. This is the story of how our little town, our piece of paradise here in southern Sarasota County, took a direct hit from Ian’s core, and how this devastating storm unceremoniously ripped open the gap between what everyone here in Southwest Florida thought we were prepared for… and what hurricane reality looks like when Mother Nature decides to show her teeth.
