After a mostly-mild winter in western South Dakota, the area got hit with arctic temperatures on Friday that finally brought the first accumulating snow of the new year. Some of the ice crystals were especially photogenic, leading one photographer to break out his macro lens and document some of the amazingly-symmetrical ice crystals. Photos were taken using a Canon T2i and reversed 18-55mm lens, using the “reverse macro technique” to achieve above life-size magnification. The snow crystals were beautiful to the naked eye, but the detail captured through the macro lens really shows just how amazing snowflakes are.
