“Something You Should Know About Me,” is a meditation on trans representation and desire housed in the language of a raunchy teen rom-com. You know, like Judd Apatow, but make it gay. And trans.
The film follows Al, a twenty-something, transgender, aspiring cartoonist who can’t draw sex.
When he tries to, weird things tend to happen; human genitals turn into household objects, bodies distort, and characters say strange things. Hoping to escape from the doldrums of his daily life—a humiliating assistant job at a toothbrush startup, a gaggle of straight girl roommates who don’t get him, and bad sex—Al signs up for a cartooning workshop housed on the campus of an all-girls private boarding school with his best friend Jesse.
At camp, it’s only a matter of time before Al realizes that he is wildly in love with Jesse and (this being a rom-com) he must do everything in his power to convince Jesse they are meant to be together. But competition has arrived in the form of Mason, an already-published indie cartoonist who oozes charisma. Al’s attempts to ward off his rival and win over the boy of his dreams play out in a series of hijinks so goofy, obnoxious, and raunchy that they could only be attributed to someone who has just escaped the throes of puberty and another round of teen angst. Which, Al has.
