Crowdsourcing Mornings: The Planetary Academy

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Greetings! Bill Nye here, CEO of The Planetary Society – also known as The Science Guy.

When we did the Science Guy show, we had very compelling research that said ten is the age by which a child will discover their so-called life-long passion for science. Now, everybody loves space, so me and my colleagues here at The Planetary Society are on a mission to spark that lifelong passion for science and space exploration with kids today!

To that end, we have been hard at work designing a special learning and membership opportunity for kids ages 5-9 and now is the time to launch itThis is where YOU come in. We have a full year’s concept in the works and now we need your help to get it across the finish line and into the world.

Wow, you may be thinking – what is this opportunity, Bill? Well, it’s a brand new Planetary Society kids membership subscription called The Planetary Academy! Our goal with this Kickstarter is to raise at least $50,000 in order to finish producing the first year of the program and launch this amazing educational opportunity for generations of kids to come.

Our first adventure pack is ready to go, and the second, third, and fourth packs are currently in development. By backing this project, you’ll provide the fuel we need to get this project to the launch pad as soon as possible!

Will you help kickstart our new Planetary Academy kids membership program by sharing your passion for astronomy and space exploration with the young explorer in your life?

The Planetary Academy is a special membership group of The Planetary Society designed for kids and families to spark a lifelong passion for space exploration. The Planetary Academy will consist of quarterly mailed packages focused on the intriguing worlds of our solar system. Each package includes images and facts about our solar system; hands-on activities, including experiments and games; and special gifts.

We want young members to feel intrigued by the bodies in our solar system, empowered with fun facts that are easy to share, more knowledgeable through vocabulary and hands-on activities, and inspired to learn more.

The plan is to have package materials change each year, so Planetary Academy members can follow their adventure through the solar system for up to 3 years, at which time they can level up to the next Planetary Academy program and take on more complex topics and experiments as their knowledge about space grows.

Just like The Planetary Society’s traditional adult membership, Planetary Academy memberships support our mission to increase discoveries in our cosmos, search for other life, and defend the Earth from asteroids and comets. Membership also funds our educational programming to inspire more of the world’s young space enthusiasts.

As of September 20th, this project has raised $85,000 of their $50,000 goal. This project has 9 days left to raise as much as it can.  For a pledge of $15, you will get one bundle.  For a pledge of $30, you will get one t-shirt.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/theplanetarysociety/the-planetary-academy?
