Crowdsourcing Mornings: Dear Little Brown Girl

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

I am very excited to share with you my very first children’s book, Dear Little Brown Girl. This beautiful & empowering lyrical ode, builds little girls’ self-esteem, imagination, and spirit. This book follows a little girl as she is navigating some of the obstacles of life. This book was created to remind little girls that they are beautiful, smart, and worthy. Creating positive self-images, teaching girls to love themselves, and increasing self-confidence.

About 12% of children’s book characters are Black/African American. The compelling story does center around one main character but we made sure to pay great attention to the identifying details like skin tone, hair type, etc. These added personalized details make the characters more relatable for the readers because I want every little girl to see herself in the character. It is important to create books that are more reflective of the diverse world that we live in and I believe having a diverse bookshelf will help instill positive ideas of equity, acceptance, inclusion, and understanding in our children. Representation Matters!

As of February 25th, this project has raised $2,500 of their $6,000 goal. This project has 19 days left to raise the $6,000 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $10, you will get one e-Book.  For a pledge of $30, you will get one signed hardcover book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/withlovejenelle/dear-little-brown-girl?
