Join us to build a free program of public and online activity around pioneering photographer James Barnor’s major survey exhibition at Serpentine this summer, connecting with audiences in London and around the world.

On 19 May, Serpentine will open a long-awaited retrospective of pioneering British-Ghanaian photographer James Barnor. Barnor’s career as a studio portraitist, photojournalist and Black lifestyle photographer spans six decades, recording major social and political changes in the two cities he calls home: London and Accra. As he approaches his 92nd birthday, Barnor’s work, defined by an enduring human connection between photographer and subject, is more vital and important than ever.

We are raising funds to go beyond the walls of the gallery and bring this landmark exhibition to life with a free public program of activity. After a year of social distancing, we want to connect with audiences in person and online, sharing Barnor’s wonderful work through a summer-long calendar of photography, poetry, music and more.

We have developed a proposed program with Bianca Ama Manu, who curated James Barnor’s Nubuke Foundation exhibition in Accra in 2019.

As of March 24th, this project has raised $3,300 of their $68,500 goal. This project has 28 days left to raise the $68,500 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $14, you will get a virtual thank you.  For a pledge of $28, you will get one exclusive poster.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1439294921/portraits-for-the-future-a-celebration-of-james-barnor?
