Fifty years ago, on July 20th, 1969, the entire world held its breath. Five decades later, man’s most outstanding milestone continues to thrill us as if it had happened yesterday. Apart from loving flip books, we are passionate space enthusiasts, and this enormous achievement has always been an inspiration to us, so we thought it would be amazing to create the ultimate flip book edition on the Apollo 11 journey, to mark the 50th anniversary of this event in history.
The first volume of the Apollo 11 Flip Book Edition is based on original footage from the NASA archives, shot during the different stages of the mission. It wasn’t easy to decide which sequences should go into the flip book, since there’s really a lot of incredible material available, but after some back and forth, we chose 6 sequences that reflect the most significant maneuvers of the Apollo 11 mission. Some of the sequences are edited in multicam shots to show the action synchronized from different angles. You’ll find 3 sequences on each side of the book.
After testing the first prototypes, we were fairly satisfied with the result, however we still missed some of the most important events that took place. What about those crucial moments that helped to make this journey a success, but couldn’t be filmed because they happened out there in space? We wanted to create a flip book that not only tells this story, but also really makes you understand what happened out there. That’s how Volume 2 came up.
Luckily, as we have our own flip book and animation studio, the solution was not too far away: during our research we learned about the original concept art, created by NASA artists in 1966 to explain the main stages of the mission to the broader public, so we decided to select the illustrations of the stages we were missing and turn them into animations.
As a result, Vol 2 has 6 more sequences depicting the moon landing from a more technical and informative point of view, whilst maintaining an artistic approach through the handmade paintings. They are some of the most important maneuvers performed by the astronauts, such as the stage separations and docking procedures and the lunar orbit insertion of the CSM-LM module.
Both flip books are intended to complement each other, so if you switch between the real footage and the animated sequences, together they become a powerful educational tool that explains the whole process of the Apollo journey.
