The Perseid Meteor Shower

One of the things I like to do is to go out into the countryside and stare into the sky.  And this weekend the Perseid Meteor Shower was at its peak!.  On late Saturday night/early Sunday morning the zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of meteors visible in a dark sky was over 90!  And I did see many meteors that flew through the sky in the Alabama night.  Here is a video from NASA explaining the Perseid Meteor Shower.

I got out of my apartment around 11:00pm Saturday night and drove away from the Anniston city lights.  I went to the Talladega Scenic Byway or AL-281 and stopped at one of the many scenic overlooks.   AL-281 does not carry much traffic but I did see lots of deer along the road.

When I got to the scenic overlook I could see the lights from the City of Oxford, AL in the distance.  It does look beautiful!

While up at the scenic overlook I leaned back on my car and took in the show.  Some of the meteors were very bright while others went across the sky very quick.  It was a great show to see but my camera had a hard time catching one.  At least I got one shot of the night sky with the moon.  This shot was taken at 2am in the morning.

Even though I did not get any shots of the meteors I did find a few photos and a video of the meteors going through the sky.  Very cool!
