Children Are Reading More!

This is an exciting new study that has come out recently.  According to the Association of American Publishers.  More books under the young adult and children categories have been sold in January 2012 vs. January 2011.

The total trade net revenue grew 27.1% vs. January 2011.  Growth was seen in all genres of books from adult, children, young adult, and religious.  Most of the growth has come from kids and teens.  Children’s/Young Adult physical format Hardcover and Paperback both saw strong double-digit growth (68.9% and 61.9% respectively).  With popular book series such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  Kids and teens now have a reason to read again.

But most of the reading growth has come from the e-books.  AAP’s first monthly data on Children’s/YA eBooks showed a massive +475.1% increase from 2011 to 2012.  I know some people out there say e-books are just another way technology is ruining real books.  But you have to admit that e-books are here to stay.  One, they take up less clutter in the house.  And two, it is cheaper to buy e-books than hard cover books.  Plus less paper is being made to print the books.  I wish more libraries would start offering e-books.

Technology is changing the way people read their favorite books.  Many older people just do not like how technology is changing the world.  But face it; technology is here to stay! Younger people prefer to read books and other things on a display.  And it’s great that it’s encouraging people to read more!  This study could easily point to technology helping out in the classroom as well.  If all school kids had a computer or an iPad.  The learning opportunities could be endless!
