The Hat Trick Of Government Corruption Is Now Complete In Alabama

Ah, today was yet another horrible and embarrassing black eye in the history of the Alabama government.  Ever since the state of Alabama became a state in 1819, and especially since the adoption of the constitution of 1901, the longest and most corrupt constitution in the world, Alabama has seen it’s share of politicians of both parties and from all branches of government get charged and convicted of corruption charges, or resign before they go to jail, the easy way out.

Today, Robert Bentley took the easy way out and resigned his governor post.  Before he resigned, he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges.  Sure, he will have to pay back his campaign funds, pay some fines, forgive his retirement money which is a HUGE blow, and serve some community service, but Robert Bentley took the easy way out.  He should have spent some time in our beautiful and well run state prison system.  I’m being sarcastic there, our state prisons are horrible!

He even had the guts to “thank” the people for being their leader of the state.  Glad you are outta here Bentley!

In the past year, the leaders of all three branches of state government have been removed from office.  It’s the hat trick of government corruption!  Some legislators were saying states like New York and New Jersey have had corruption governors removed before.  Yes, most states have had to remove a corrupt leader before, not every person is clean as they say when they were running for office.  But never before the speaker of the state house, the chief justice of the state supreme court, and the governor have all been removed because of corruption, in the same term, and all within a one year period.  It has never happened before in any state!

I’m sitting here watching the local news and I hear state leaders say things like “the future is bright in Alabama”, or “the worst is behind us.”  And I think to myself, what a horrible thing to say!  We continue to have leaders in our state government be corrupt or do things based on how much money they receive.  It was a big problem when the Democrats were in power in Montgomery, and now it’s a big problem with the Republicans in power now.  But hey, quit blaming the legislators, judges, and government officials for the problems in Montgomery, we need to start blaming ourselves.

Most people in Alabama will either vote via party lines or vote for the person who says they are for “family values”, or say they are a good “Christian person”, or say they will keep “government small” and “keep taxes low.”  You know what I mean, we see these people in every election cycle.  And these people who say these things are mostly the ones who always gets in trouble with the law and become corrupt inside state government.  Until we QUIT voting for these idiots, the cycle of corruption and wrongdoing will continue!  We can’t continue to keep voting for Darth Vader, right?

We can’t keep saying “thank God for Mississippi” anymore!  Alabama has the third highest unemployment rate in America.  We have a state prison system that is in shambles.  We have a Medicaid crisis where people can’t afford to see a doctor.  We have infrastructure that is crumbling with no funds to fix it.  We have schools that are rapidly declining with horrible math and reading scores.  We have hardly any mental health services or a good court system.  I can go on and on with the problems Alabama is facing, it’s not good!

Every year something stupid comes into the news from Montgomery, from the Luv Gov, to HB 56 which scared many people, to a current bill that would install “ransomware” onto all phones and computers to stop porn (who comes up with these things?)  The people in Montgomery continue to propose and pass stupid things that causes Alabama to be embarrassed in the worldwide media yet again, or yet another government official becomes corrupt, or we have to spend taxpayer money defending bills that are unconstitutional,  it’s a neverending cycle that seems like it never wants to end!  It’s like our leaders in Montgomery has money to burn baby!

How about doing something different for a change?  How about reforming our archaic 1901 tax structure?  How about maybe raising the property taxes from being dead last in America so we can properly fund education?  Yes, that means quit listening to those so called lobbyists from ALFA Insurance and Alabama Power.  How about allowing us to vote on a statewide lottery so we can quit seeing millions leave the state?  Yes, that means quit listening to the Business Council of Alabama for a change.  How about requiring insurance companies to pay for Autism therapy like 46 other states already do?  Yes, that means kicking the bums from Blue Cross / Blue Shield out of the state house.  I can go on and on about things to improve Alabama!

And how about something radical, like making marijuana legal?  Yet, you clowns in Montgomery will continue to listen to those churches who those attending have to listen to politics instead of preaching from the Bible.  Alabama will continue this cycle of being dead last in everything, having multiple government officials being corrupt, and being embarrassed almost every day in the national and worldwide media.  This has to stop, and soon!  We are now in a worldwide economy, and everyday this continues, Alabama loses!  It’s like Willy Wonka telling us “You Lose” every single day!

If you people living in Alabama wants to change this, there is only one thing to do, vote for someone else!  Vote for the person in the other party you don’t like, vote against the person who praises “family values”, or is a so-called “True Christian.”  Don’t believe the person who says they are for “small government” and “lower taxes.”  Those sayings means people are harmed and we have to rely on the federal government for funding.  I wonder how long that lasts with Trump in the White House?

Until we do that, we will continue to see self-centered, racist, greedy, corrupt, selfish, and bigot government leaders.  And in our world today, having people like that serving in our government means we lose!  I want to win!  We can’t keep welcoming people to Sweet Home Alabama for much longer if we stay corrupt and stupid!

Sunday Discussion: Alabama Is Closing Things Down, Thanks To ALFA Insurance

Geek Alabama Discussion

Hey Alabama, what do you have cooking?  Or, what do you have in the terms of natural beauty and ways to allow people to drive and vote?  Because starting now, Alabama is going to make it harder to get a driver’s license or allow people to visit their state parks.  I mean, are you actually surprised?  Because the government leaders in this state are loving this, they would like to see fewer people to vote in rural areas, where people lean more towards the Democrats.  And they would love people to skip going to state parks, and instead spend their money at a store, so tax revenue from the extremely high sales taxes can help the state.

The general fund budget for 2016 keeps some things in the state like prisons and Medicare intact with level funding, but for everything else, the legislature is saying “screw you!”  31 driver license offices will close down across the state, and most of them will be in rural areas, especially in the black belt, where most people tends to vote democratic.  As you can see, in Alabama you must have a photo ID to vote, that is not expired.  So, let’s make it much harder for people to obtain a photo ID to vote.  Not everyone has the funds or the transportation to get the ID they need to vote.  And for the ones who say you can renew online, you can’t do that every time!  You eventually have to update your photo.

Second, five state parks will close down, most of them in the rural black belt area.  So, for Alabama to continue advertising to people to spend time outdoors, unless you have the money and transportation to travel to another part of the state to experience the outdoors, you will be giving false hope to those who wants to enjoy the outdoors in Alabama, but don’t have the means to do so.  Not only some state parks are closing, other services in other state parks are closing for the Winter, like restaurants and golf courses.  And with the way things are going, expect more state parks to close, because the legislature in Montgomery would rather make sure out-of-state corporations don’t pay any taxes instead of allowing anyone to enjoy nature in this state.

Third, over 20 National Guard armories across Alabama will be closing down.  So the next time a tornado or weather disaster strikes in the state, you are telling many of the citizens that you are on your own.  If your house is destroyed by a tornado, hope you have the money to protect what you have left and to rebuild.  As you can see, the legislature did the least amount possible to not have the citizens boycott what is going on.  I mean, it could have been worse, as every state park would have closed down, and only four driver’s license offices would remain open in Alabama, which would have meant very long lines and people driving with expired licenses.

But, there is one organization in Alabama to blame for all of this mess.  It’s not the legislature; it’s the Alabama Farmers Federation, or ALFA Insurance.  You see, the legislature wanted to pass a business privilege tax so big corporations would pay a tax in the state, but ALFA lobbied to stop that, saying the tax would harm growth in Alabama.  These same folks are also against any property tax increase in the state.  The property taxes in Alabama are the lowest in the United States, if the state doubled the property taxes, we would still have some of the lowest property taxes in the state.

So, if you need to blame someone for seeing state parks close down, and making it harder to get or renew a driver’s license, blame ALFA!  You need someone to blame for the mess across the state, blame ALFA!  You need someone to blame when the education budgets are raided because the legislature don’t have to raise some taxes, blame ALFA!  You get the picture; ALFA Insurance is the main reason why things are closing down across the state.  Maybe you will think about this the next time you are considering doing business with ALFA, take your business somewhere else, so your money is not used lobbying the Alabama legislature to keep this state stuck in the past.

Sunday Discussion: Five Things That Can Fix The Alabama Legislature Circus Act

Geek Alabama Discussion

On this Sunday Discussion, I wanted to talk about the chaos inside the circus otherwise known as the Alabama Legislature.  In the last seven days, Medicaid was almost killed in Alabama, Forever Wild was almost killed, not one tax increase made it out of committee, and no one can agree on a General Fund budget.  I mean come on, do you really think anything good will come out of a group of clowns and circus performers?  Instead of making Alabama better, the clowns have been herding the elephants, performing corrupt dance moves, and shooting out of the circus cannon, many times!

So, I am styling this post as if you were inside an arena and watching a circus performance.  Instead of seeing professional circus performers, pretend that you were instead seeing our legislators in the place of the performers.  The clowns are the lawmakers who are funny, I mean clowns are supposed to be funny and do silly things.  Do you see some comparisons here, I do!  But that’s not all, the dancers and artists in the circus act are the state employees who are being told what to do by the clowns.  The elephants in the circus show are the people following the clowns around.  And of course, the ringmaster is Governor Bentley, who is having a very hard time controlling the circus!

So I wanted to talk about five things I feel like would move the Alabama circus act to a better place.  A place where the economy is better and people are not poor and struggling.  In this Alabama circus act, the audience is the poor and disabled, who are forced to pay to watch a circus train wreck!  And for the audience, you can’t skip this circus act, you are forced to pay and watch!  What would be the first thing I would change in the Alabama circus act?  For starters, some major tax reforms!  In the current circus act, the poor and disabled are forced to pay a huge ticket price, or taxes, to watch circus performers who do a terrible job making people smile and laugh.

So for starters, I would lower the ticket prices, or the taxes, for the poor and disabled and also not force them to pay and watch this circus act.  Instead, I would start up a tiered ticket price system, where the rich have to pay a much higher ticket price, or taxes to watch this circus show.  For the poor and disabled, they would pay a much lower ticket price, or taxes.  I would do this by reforming the property tax system Alabama has currently.  It’s long time for the property taxes, especially those with large timber holdings and farms, to pay their fair share!  In fact, if Alabama doubled their property taxes, the state would still have one of the lowest property taxes in the United States.

Second, a circus act usually has ways where you can pay extra to enjoy a better circus experience.  In this instance, it would be a lottery and gambling.  Right now, every state surrounding Alabama has some type of gambling, from a lottery, to casinos.  And every time the jackpots go sky high, people drive to the neighboring states to get lottery tickets.  That is money which is leaving Alabama!  Why does Alabama not have a lottery and gambling?  Is the circus too afraid that the circus boss, or God, will come and strike down on you?  It’s long time for Alabama to allow a lottery and casino gambling.  It would be a gamechanger for the state, and the state would have more revenues!  More revenue would be good for the circus as well.

Third, the circus currently has clowns who are doing some very naughty things.  These clowns are saying cuss words, or giving the middle finger, or even taking their clothes off.  In comparison, there are lawmakers who should have already stepped aside, especially the speaker of the house who is facing 20+ corruption charges.  The state has several lawmakers who only cares about power, and who cares about getting in trouble with the law, they will keep that power until they are dragged out.  Kind of like this circus, where the clowns will continue to do bad things until the police come in and drag them out.  Doing any naughty things should never pay, even in this circus act, or even in the legislature.

Fourth, this circus act has a Yelp page!  And the Yelp reviews are in, and they are very bad!  But who cares about those Yelp reviews, the circus will continue to do what they are known to do, even if it harms their business.  Kind of like the legislature!  Where the calls to change the current status quo is growing, but nothing is being done to make the legislature a better place, instead you keep seeing the name calling and punches being thrown because of anger.  If this circus act wants to get better Yelp reviews, it should change up what they are doing so people have a better experience at the show, just like the legislature!  How about having the courage to change something up?  It won’t kill you to do it!

And lastly, the circus act has too many businesses and sponsors who are controlling the strings and telling the circus what to do.  The sponsors want more clowns, and more elephants and cannon shots, something the public does not want to see!  The public wants to see something new and awesome!  And in comparing this to the legislature, the sponsors are the lobbyists and businesses who are controlling the legislators.  They are telling the lawmakers what to do, and if they don’t do it, they pull their financial support to them.  And we all know that money is everything these days, especially in elections!  So the legislators just follow the herd, and don’t have the guts to something different!  It’s time to try something new!

giphy (1)

So there you have it!  I have just compared the Alabama Legislature to a circus act, and it is a very truthful statement!  Which clowns do you have more trust in?  The ones you see in a circus act, or the ones down in Montgomery making all the rules?  I know that answer; I would rather see the clowns perform in a circus act.  The clowns in the legislature are just in disguise, and would do anything possible to make the poor and disabled hurt even more!

Tim Cook Has Stirred The Alabama Political Hornet Nest

As some of you might know, Apple CEO Tim Cook is from Alabama.  He was born in South Alabama, and went to school at Auburn University.  Even though he has announced that he is gay, and he has slammed several lawmakers in Montgomery, Tim Cook is not afraid to speak his mind about corruption and problems here in Alabama.  His latest example of this was when he gave the commencement address to students at George Washington University.  You can watch the speech below, but to sum it up, Tim Cook said that meeting Governor George Wallace in 1977 was not an honor for him.

He even said that shaking his hand felt like a betrayal of his own beliefs. And shaking Wallace’s hand was like selling a piece of his soul.  Soon after this meeting, Tim Cook got to meet President Jimmy Carter.  Tim said the president was compassionate and he had not sacrificed any of his humanity.  Tim Cook said it was clear to him that one was right and one was wrong.  Yep, way to stir the hornets nest down here in Alabama Tim Cook.  I agree with what he said, but this lit up social media with many here in Alabama disagreeing with Tim Cook.

A good example is the Facebook page of Yellowhammer News.  When they posted a story about this, it lit up their comments.  Here is an example of the bad comments.

And Alabamians should stop referring to him as a native Alabamian…

Being a former segregationist is bad but it’s not bad to have Chinese children work in a sweat shop to make your product. Typical liberal double standard.

I’m one of those “dang Yankees” who moved to Alabama 30 years ago at age 18. What a wonderful state and those born & raised here that I’ve gotten to know and become friends with are just awesome! He can move to Cleveland, Ohio. He’d fit in perfectly there!

He relates his experience of shaking hands with someone whose views or opinions were different from his to “selling a piece of his soul”…smh…Why don’t ya have a hissy fit, ya little drama queen…

Cook has shown previously that he doesn’t love his native state of Alabama. That’s his right, just like it’s my right to not care for his ideas on more than one issue.

Tim Cook has too much time on his hands. Take care of of your JOB, and stay out of ALABAMA.

What’s “uncalled for” about saying George Wallace was a terrible person? He was a terrible person! Good for Tim Cook! You don’t have to love Alabama. Like everyone says, “If you don’t like it here, then leave!” Well, he did! Good for him!

He’s just trying to keep up an image. Just another lackey for the North. Stay out of Alabama Timbo. Your a disgrace to all the Alabamians that have died fighting this country’s wars. A Country that most of the nation makes fun of daily. From now on you Northerners and the east and west coast fight your own wars. Traitor idiot.

Tim Cook has successfully talked me into making my next phone anything but an iPhone.

George Thomas you are a d*** just like Tim Cook. Cook is an embarrassment to the state of AL.

With these comments, you now wonder why this state is in such deep trouble with their budgets, and is about to have parts of the state government taken over by the feds because we can’t do the right thing, reform the horrible tax code and the 1901 state constitution.  Oh well, I guess people here in Alabama wants to stay in the 1950’s.  With comments like these, you can see why Alabama is backwards.

Sunday Discussion: Comparing Alabama’s Government / Political Problems To The Wizard Of Oz

Geek Alabama Discussion

Everybody remembers The Wizard of Oz.  You know the story, Dorothy gets sucked up in that Kansas twister and ends up in a fantasy world.  The story has plenty of great moral lessons, including being smart, having a heart, and gaining courage, something that is somehow lacking in the Alabama Legislature.  Where it’s filled with people who lacks the smarts, does not have a heart, and does not have the courage to do the right thing.  Which is to redo the upside tax code which needed fixing since the 1901 constitution was written.

So, this Sunday Discussion is going to compare the problems inside the Alabama Legislature and government to this classic movie.  And oh boy, there are plenty of things I can compare between this classic movie and a corrupt government, let’s go!

Dorothy and Toto

First off, let’s compare the main characters, Dorothy and Toto, to the Alabama government.  Dorothy and Toto have no idea where they are after being in that tornado.  Sure, they get some help from strangers like the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Lion.  But, it takes the wrongdoings of the Wicked Witch of the West and the melting of her to get Dorothy and Toto back home, or at least waking up from being knocked out.  In comparison, anyone who moves to Alabama and is not an extreme right wing / tea party nut job comes into the state just like Dorothy and Toto.

These people wonders why we have elected leaders who are corrupt and are on a mission to downsize the Alabama Government so much that the feds have to come in and take over.  People like me who are independent or are Democrats are mostly left feeling alone and needing someone to talk too, just like Dorothy and Toto in the movie.  Sure, they meet other people, but they get taken for a ride and are almost destroyed just like in the movie.  Keep reading, this post just gets better!

Wicked Witch of the West

In the movie, the Wicked Witch wants those ruby slippers so bad she almost kills Dorothy.  And she has plenty of evil puppets to make sure she gets her evil deeds done.  In comparison, the legislature is just like the Wicked Witch, wanting to take more tax money from the poor and elderly while taking less tax money from the rich.

Sen. Bill Hightower has introduced a flat tax bill that would impose a flat 2.75% state income tax for individuals and a 4.59% tax for corporations.  The problem, mostly all deductions for individuals would disappear.  And anyone earning less than $12,600 for a family of four, where they don’t pay a state income tax, would be forced to pay taxes.  At the same time, most deductions for corporations would stay in place.  So cool, make poor people pay more taxes while the rich pay less in taxes.  It’s just like the Wicked Witch winning, killing Dorothy, and getting those ruby slippers.  See the connection?

Great and Powerful Oz

In the movie, Oz is hiding way back in a building and behind a curtain.  He wants to be so powerful that he scares the people living in Oz to not question his authority.  In comparison, the Alabama Legislature is just like Oz.  They are passing unconstitutional bills, and making sure they can be more powerful and corrupt, and they scare anyone who wants to question their authority.  Mike Hubbard, who is facing corruption charges, is the biggest Oz lookalike.

He wants no one to question his authority, and he pretty much runs the show.  Including closing down the state house session early, just so he can go meet with his lawyers.  He also likes to talk down to any other legislator who thinks he is doing the wrong thing.  In the movie, Oz eventually does the right thing.  But, I don’t think Mike Hubbard will be doing the right thing anytime soon, other than making sure he does not drop the soap in prison.

The Scarecrow

In the movie, the Scarecrow wants a brain.  Man, that is something everyone needs, especially our legislators!  For example, some in the legislature signed and passed a resolution that tells the governor not to expand Medicaid under any circumstances.  I mean, leaving billions on the table while the poor can not get the medical help they need is something someone would do without a brain.  Another thing to do without a brain, de-fund more public schools by expanding the Alabama Accountability Act.  Sure, give tax breaks to the rich folks so they don’t have to spend the money for private schooling, genius!

Another thing to do without a brain, pass laws that are unconstitutional and will require taxpayer money to defend in court.  Rep. Terri Collins introduced the fetal heartbeat bill that would also require an trans-vaginal ultrasound.  Another legislator introduced the  People’s Trust Act that would allow the state to skip a $15 million payment for one year.  And there are other bills that would discriminate against gay people in Alabama.  Enjoy spending taxpayer money losing!  Also something from people who don’t have a brain.  The Patient Save Access Act would allow medical marijuana in Alabama, it probably won’t see the light of day.

The Tin Man

In the movie, the Tin Man wants a heart.  We need a heart to survive, but we also need a heart to do the right and moral thing.  Something the Alabama Legislature and political leaders don’t want to do.  For example, Chief Justice Roy Moore lacks the heart to allow two people of the same-sex to get married, and will fight to keep the ban even if the US Supreme Court rules to allow same-sex marriages in all 50 states in June.

Another person who lacks a heart is Attorney General Luther Strange.  While he is spending taxpayer money to defend unconstitutional laws that breaks up families and allows the rights of others to be taken away, he wrote a op-ed saying not allowing gambling, new taxes, and the allowing of unearmarking funds would solve the general fund deficit.  What he didn’t say is most of the earmarked funds goes to education and schools, and unearmarking them to fund prisons is the most heart-worthy thing to do, how awesome is that!

The Cowardly Lion

In the movie, the Cowardly Lion wants to have some courage.  And everyone needs some courage!  I give credit to some in the legislature who has the courage to try to do the right thing.  For example, Del Marsh will be introducing a bill to allow a lottery in Alabama and allow the Poarch Creek Indians to have casinos gaming.  The bill would also allow the state dog tracks to have casino gaming as well.  The gaming would be taxed to help the general fund.  You think this will pass and be good, think again.

Sadly, many churches and so called Christian leaders lack the courage to allow this to pass.  Even if this bill does pass the legislature, the people of Alabama must vote on this and approve it to become law.  You know that many church leaders along with the The Alabama Citizens Action Program are already organizing their people and members to tell people to vote no on this.  Let’s see, vote no on gambling or new taxes, but make sure the cuts are so severe the state government will shut down, that is Christians for you in Alabama!

The Flying Monkeys

In the movie, the monkeys are the Wicked Witch’s puppets.  They do what the witch wants them to do.  In comparison, most of the people of Alabama are the evil Flying Monkeys.  Think about it, we just do what our elected officials wants us to do.  If the officials tells them to reelect them, they do it.  If they tell them to support major cuts, they support the cuts.  If they tell them to rise up and complain, they do it as well.  We are their puppets, like in the movie!

Here is something to think about, if you are like the Flying Monkeys, and just do what the elected officials tells you to do, you are a part of the Alabama Government problem.  You just can’t always just do what someone else tells you to do, sometimes you need to do something different.  Like vote for another candidate or a dreaded Democrat, or just refuse to do what the elected official wants you to do.  Being different is a good thing, something more people needs to do!

The Tornado

The Tornado in the movie sends Dorothy and Toto to another world.  But you don’t see a lot of damage in the twister.  The tornado in the movie is just like the tornado Alabama could be facing with the nearly $700 million general fund deficit.  Our glorious legislators are looking at nothing to raise some revenue, other than gambling.  So, most likely the Alabama twister is about to gobble up Montgomery and the state and destroy everything in its path.

What will be destroyed?  Prisons, mental health, state parks, state troopers, state health, courts, National Guard, human resources, EPA, senior care, and anything else not education/schools in Alabama.  This will only force the feds to come in via their own tornado, and force the state to shutdown or go bankrupt!  The cleanup after a tornado can take a long time to complete.  Sadly, the cleanup after the Alabama cutback tornado might never be cleaned up and corrected.

So, what do you think?  Is the Alabama government like the Wizard of Oz movie?  I think so!  Some of us might be wishing we were wearing those ruby-red slippers in the movie.  And instead of saying “there’s no place like home.”  I would be saying “there’s needs to be real change.”  I can keep hitting those slippers together, but I don’t think you will see any real change anytime soon in the Alabama government.  Maybe slippers like those or a tornado can transport me to another state?
