My Story Of Rescuing A Dog And The Hate And Backlash I Received For It

Not too long ago, I noticed a dog wondering around on the housing complex I live at.  The dog was very friendly, really loved those pets, and was very happy!

I got the dog to the front porch, gave the dog water which the dog drank a lot of water, and gave the dog some food as well.  The dog even got to take a nap on the front porch.

I was trying to figure out what to do with the dog, since I could not keep the dog.  For all of those complaining I should have kept the dog, the lease agreement where I live at does not allow big pets.  And even if the dog was little, I would have to put down a pet deposit and pay a monthly fee, in my situation that was not going to happen.

And even if I could have a pet, I would never be able to pay for any vet bills.  So I called the local Jacksonville, Alabama animal control.  And I found out the city only has one animal control officer and she was out on medical leave.  We texted back and forth and found out the same dog was at a park on the northern side of Jacksonville.  This dog travelled nearly two miles to where I live at!

Since the animal control officer was out, I had to transport the dog to the animal shelter.  I managed to get the dog in the car and the dog rode very well on the way down to the shelter and I was giving the dog pets all the way down as well.

When I got to the Calhoun County Humane Society, the staff took the dog inside and scanned for a microchip, which the dog did not have one.  After the dog got a shot, and I filled out brief paperwork, I drove back home.

And I was thinking while driving on the way back home I would get praise and good things about rescuing a dog from terrible things like being shot at, attacked by other dogs, or being hit by a car.  But no, most of the comments were filled with extreme hate.

My photo even made it to a local Facebook group to helping lost pets.

I got many comments ranging from the dog was going to be put down and cross the rainbow bridge, to comments attacking my disability, comments attacking my weight, comments attacking my disability, and hundreds more bad comments across multiple social media platforms.

Yes, some of the comments were kind and supportive, like this comment.

And this is a problem I get on social media and in person as well.  Most people see I am vulnerable, and that makes me an easy target to be attacked, hated on, and made fun of. Gee, I wonder what I think of most of society, that answer is simple.

I feel like most of society is filled with hateful, bigoted, insecure, angry, sad and depressed people who just don’t care.  And many of these same people takes out their issues on people, who are vulnerable, like people with disabilities.

No wonder why I think the United States is failing!

And there is good news about this dog story!  The dog, which is now named Tanner, is now up for adoption!

The dog is available at the Calhoun County Humane Society, located in Anniston, Alabama.  I hope the dog finds a great family to call home!
