So what is the most important topic that should be taught in schools? In my opinion, it’s not science. It’s not math. It’s not English. It’s history, civics, and social studies.
During my time in school, classes in history and social studies were not taken very seriously. The lessons did not go very deep in topic. The teachers were really not that great. In fact, one teacher in high school teaching world history got in trouble and was charged with embezzlement.
The civics class we had in high school was a joke. And overall, every school I went to and several different states did not take history, civics, or social studies seriously enough. The schools concentrate more on math, English, science, and electives.
The schools did not take physical education seriously enough either, but that is for a different post.
In red state America today, you can see why politicians are passing bills that restrict and bans the accurate teaching of History. These Republican lawmakers keep saying they don’t want the bad side of America to be taught to students.
Well guess what? You have to teach the bad side of America! The United States has had a very rough history with many terrible things happening inside this country. And students should know about this!
Everything from slavery, racism, hatred, division, everything bad about America in our history must be taught to our students and cannot be ignored!
And it’s not just history class. Schools are also being forced to restrict what kind of social studies that they could teach.
Red states are banning everything from social-emotional learning to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Republicans in red states don’t want their schools and students to be taught on how to be a good person to themselves and other people.
Right wingers want students to be taught to be mean, angry, divisive, and be the worst person they can be.
And red state America and their extremist politicians don’t want civics to be taught at schools at all.
When I was at school, civics class was not taken seriously and was seen as a joke.
I have learned much more about our nation’s history, social studies, and civics from the internet and TV channels than what I learned at school.
And it’s sad it has to be like that, because you should be taught the accurate history of the United States.
You should be taught all the good and accurate things about social studies.
And you should be taught the accurate stuff about civics.
But you will not see that happening in any red-state school anytime soon.
Because Republicans want ignorant, dumb, stupid students. Besides, who is going to work those minimum wage jobs anyways?
