Last Friday, the famous Talladega Superspeedway allowed people to drive their own cars on the track for charity.  The benefit was to raise money for people effected by the tornadoes that struck Alabama recently.  Over $45,000 was raised!

Supporters from a host of states, including as far away as New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Illinois and Pennsylvania made the trek to the greatest race track in the world to make two full exhilarating laps around the mammoth 2.66-mile venue in their personal vehicles for a minimal donation of $50. Of course, many came from all parts of Alabama, as well as neighboring states’ Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi.

The proceeds will go to American Red Cross Alabama Disaster Relief through ‘DEGA Gives, a donor advised fund of The NASCAR Foundation. Under chamber of commerce sunny skies, hundreds of street-legal cars and trucks made their way onto the steep, 33-degree banking from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. CDT.

So below you can watch my experience driving on the track.  I got to drive six laps on the track, I got lucky as officials there said the first three laps were screwed up so I got three more laps.  After entering the track from pit road, I attempted the first curve banking, and I got off of that quickly.  Some are wondering why I never drove on the banking.  And to begin things, quite a few cars other than me did not drive on the banking either.

Well, a extremely light SUV combined with my weight, meant most of the weight was concentrated on the driver side of the car.  I did not want to be the first to flip and ruin a personal car on the track.  Now yes, one day I would love to ride or drive in a real race car on the track and do the curve banks the right way, but it needs to be a better car.  Anyways, I loved driving on the track, and it was a great experience!  Thank you Talladega Superspeedway officials for doing this!

Talladega Superspeedway’s motorsports tripleheader spring race weekend is just around the corner, set for April 24-25.
