On this Good News Fridays, let’s talk about three things that should get you inspired! Okay, let’s go!
Ride 4 Gabe
Next weekend, two people will begin a cross-country bike ride, to raise money and awareness for uchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), which is caused by an absence of dystrophin, a protein that helps keep the muscles intact. The onset of this fatal disorder occurs during early childhood and causes generalized weakness and muscle wasting that increases over time. While medical advances have led to some very promising clinical trials, to date there is no cure and no one has survived. The campaign is all about a 9-year-old boy named Gabe Griffin who lives in Shelby County.
Hope For Gabe is run by Gabe’s parents Scott and Traci Griffin. The sad truth is this, without a cure, Gabe is expected by doctors to be in a wheelchair by the time he is 10 to 12 years old and lose his life around the age of 20. A promising drug has slowed the progression of this disorder for 12 children who have been on it for 156 weeks and counting. Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration has not used their authority to grant access to the many other children like Gabe who suffer from Duchenne. And of course, the parents are willing to do anything for their son!
The Griffin’s run a foundation called Hope for Gabe (H4G), and the bicycle ride is being called Ride4Gabe. Michael Staley, an Alabama resident who lives in Washington, D.C., and Indiana University student Wes Bates of Aurora, Colorado, will begin cycling from Astoria, Oregon on June 28. They will cross the country, averaging about 75 miles a day, and eventually cross Alabama from north to south, completing Ride4Gabe in Mobile by mid-August. Both riders say they are passionate about educating the public about this muscle-killing disorder that affects one in 3,500 young boys.

Driving A Tractor Across America
Ivan Stoltzfus is doing something not many people would ever do, drive an antique tractor across America to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project. Ivan Stoltzfus is an auctioneer and real estate broker, as well as a retired farmer. He is driving a 1948 John Deere Model A with a 24′ camper attached to the back. He began the trip in April, and as of this writing, Ivan is crossing through Nebraska.
The goal of the endeavor is to bring recognition and support for the many heroes of the USA — hurting men and women who sacrificed of themselves for our nation’s freedom. 100% of all monies raised will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project — an organization supporting injured service members. With your help, Ivan hopes to raise 1 Million Dollars for the Wounded Warriors. As of this writing, Ivan has raised around $75,000, but he needs your help! Stephen’s Story
In this video below, you get to see the story of Stephen Sutton, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer and the cancer was not curable. The doctors told him to go home and get some rest, but Stephen did not do that! So before Stephen’s cancer took his life, Stephen created a 46 item bucket list, and set out to complete his bucket list. He skydived, played the drums at Wembley Stadium, hugged a big animal, and raised money for charity, over $5 million dollars! Yes, Stephen became a celebrity, but sadly cancer took his life.
