Animation Monday: Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja

Tonight at 7/6c Disney XD premieres a new animated series from Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff whose past shows include Celebrity Deathmatch. (that show was great) Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja is already getting some great reviews and it sounds like a weird title but let me explain what the show is about. The show will follow freshman Randy Cunningham who finds out he will be the ninja that will protect his town called Norrisville following a 800 year tradition. He will be the official town ninja for the next 4 years until he graduates high school and cannot tell people who he really is except for his friend Howard Weinerman. These two guys are really best friends and a part of this series is going to test their bromance.

Randy is voiced by Ben Schwartz from Parks & Recreation. He loved Disney animation so much growing up that he’s just amazed he’s getting the opportunity to voice the lead for Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja. Howard is voiced by Andrew Caldwell and the town’s evil Sorcerer is voiced by Tim Curry from Home Alone 2. The evil sorcerer wants to destroy the ninja so bad he is willing to turn the most vulnerable people in the school into rampaging monsters. This sounds like the perfect plot for the show.

The ninja gets its powers from the 800-year-old guide known as the NinjaNomicon, and all of the responsibilities that go along with both. This means that Randy has to protect his school and the world; all while adjusting to pressures of high school. Most kids today would fail if they had this responsibility.

This pilot of the show was really fun to watch. And I do think this show is going to do well on Disney XD. I hope they will show some preview episodes on Disney Channel since everyone does not get Disney XD. The show does fit with the boy theme on Disney XD and I believe you will see many people watching this series. Here’s to another hit for Titmouse Inc. and Boulder Media.
