Animation Monday: Sanjay and Craig

Geek Alabama Animation

Yep, I know this Animation Monday is on a Wednesday.  I have been busy with stuff!  But I wanted to talk about this new show that has premiered on Nickelodeon.  Sanjay and Craig reminds me of some classic animated shows from the 1990’s like Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead.  The show features a boy named Sanjay and a talking snake named Craig and the pair goes on some crazy adventures!  This show is like some of the classic Nicktoons we saw in the 1990’s.  And I will say this, this show is going to help Nickelodeon regain their lost ratings!  The premiere episode drew nearly four million viewers which is huge for cable!

The show stars Maulik Pancholy as Sanjay and Chris Hardwick as Craig.  Yes, that Chris Hardwick that hosts Talking Dead and is the star of Nerdist.  Each episode shows the pair embarking on epic kid-inspired quests that are at times totally ridiculous, absolutely gross and weirdly sweet.  Some other characters includes a unhinged, snake-phobic neighbor, named Mr. Noodman voiced by Tony Hale, Linda Cardellini as Megan, Matt Jones as Hector, and Kunal Nayyar as Vijay.

The show does have some gross-out humor.  The opening episode did feature the first ever butt transplant and yes, somehow the newer butt got loose and it went all around the hospital making fart sounds as the butt bounced around.  The show is executive produced by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi, the creators of the classic Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete & Pete.  The creators wanted to make a show they were wanting to make for awhile now.  They have gotten their chance to make their show and so far, I am liking it!

So here are some things I like about Sanjay and Craig.  The series is hand drawn!  Most cartoons you see on TV today are computer animated so this show is a breath of fresh air from most other forms of animation.  The show does have its juvenile side; but the show is very smart and funny!  Sanjay and Craig are really good friends to each other and they will do anything they find interesting.  The two have a very active imagination and the cartoon shows their creative side but they are also smart and funny.

This cartoon reminds me of Bob’s Burgers and Regular Show and I think this show will be around for a while.  It has the nostalgia feel of 90’s Nickelodeon and the show has appeal for kids and adults.  This is the show Nickelodeon needed to boost their ratings which have been in a massive slump.  Nickelodeon needed something to replace SpongeBob SquarePants and I think Sanjay and Craig is the show that can do it!
