Ever since I started Geek Alabama, when I covered any event, or when I uploaded a new picture to Instagram, those pictures also went to Flickr. Along with the Geek Alabama Facebook page and Google Photos, I uploaded every event photo to Flickr. Sadly, I will no longer be using Flickr and will delete my entire account, and it’s all because of greed.
What I liked about Flickr was you had a one TB size limit, which meant it was impossible to reach. When SmugMug purchased Flickr, they decided that having a free account was horrible, and began Flickr Pro which charges you over $50 per year. That’s okay if someone had a steady income, but for someone like me who relies on Social Security Disability to survive, Flickr Pro was too much of a cost.
What also got me upset, was the announcement that Flickr would delete photos on any free plan until it was under 1,000 photos. I mean come on, I have over 18,000 photos on my Flickr, many of these photos are from the many events I have covered. Having Flickr becoming the evil mean guy and saying they don’t care about you and would delete your photos is a greedy, horrible move.
And besides, I can still use my Facebook page and Google Photos to upload all of my event photos, for free! Along with uploading the photos on Geek Alabama, I used Facebook, Google, and Flickr so people could see my work in many places as possible. Now Flickr wants to make my life harder and make me pay money I don’t have so others can see what I do, I call this a dick move.
So, after today, my Flickr account will be a thing of the past. Thankfully you can still find all event photos I have done on my Facebook page, and Google Photos. But I will no longer upload any photos to Flickr. And I will also be deleting my Flickr account. I highly doubt the folks from Flickr will read this post, but if they ever do, let me say this.
I think it’s wrong to require people like myself, who has disabilities, and does amazing work, to pay just to showcase someone’s work. I can’t believe that Flickr went the evil and greedy route. And it’s too bad, because Flickr had a good service. No amount of discounts to Flickr Pro will make me come back. Goodbye Flickr, it was nice knowing you. I hope your greedy move will prove disastrous and you close down for good.
