Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

We Want to Make a Borb Book.

For more than a decade, Dane and Ashlie (the team behind Monkey Minion) have been making nerdy art and other creative stuff that we want to see exist in the world. With each new idea and story, we make the stuff that makes us smile, and we hope like heck that it makes you smile too.

Mostly, we manage it all out of our own little hobbit hole. We’re DIYers at heart and we love to show up with a thing we’ve dreamed about already realized. Done. Complete. Ready to enjoy.

But even a little book is a big thing. As we (and you, probably) already know, getting a beautiful, high-quality art book made takes a little bit more than the best hopes of two creative nerds with birds on the brain. So we’re asking for your help.

Hold On. What the Heck is Borbs?

Simply put, Bird + Orb = Borb. If you see a cardinal fluffed up in the cold, that’s a borb.

Borbs came about on a cross-country move. Ashlie was driving the Uhaul, and Dane was sitting in the passenger seat, trying to draw. Dane had drawn a circle when Ashlie hit a bump and his pen jagged – making a triangle shaped mark next to the circle. As a guy with birds on the brain, Dane immediately thought “Hey, that kinda looks like a bird” and fleshed it out. He spent the better part of the next couple of days refining and sketching until Borbs were hatched. (Pun intended.)

Borbs. Got it. So Why a Book?

Once he got started, Dane really enjoyed the process of turning birds into Borbs. They made us smile, and people seemed to like them, so Dane just kept drawing new Borbs.

It turns out that there are a LOT of birds. At first, we produced small limited edition prints, but plenty of those sold out. And we thought: if a couple of Borbs is great, then isn’t a flock even better?

So this book is our first real flock of Borbs. We picked 50 to go into this collected volume. Then Dane made the art bigger and Ashlie researched and wrote some fun facts about each and every borb and Dane got creative with what they like to eat. Which means the reader gets 100 full color pages of pure Borby goodness (plus the table of contents, and all the other stuff you gotta have in a book).

As of August 13th, this project has raised $4,600 of their $5,000 goal. This project has 6 days left to raise the $5,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $20, you will get one book. For a pledge of $35, you will get one book and print. To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/monkeyminionpress/the-big-book-of-borbs?
