Mike Hoffman’s Octavia novels are about a mysterious, white-haired woman who may be a Sorceress or a Mad Scientist conducting unholy experiments in her remote Spanish castle. The stories are a mix of fantasy, science-fiction, and horror, with a focus on strange occurrences and the protagonist’s mysterious powers over mortal men.
- Protagonist: The central figure is Octavia, described as a “femme Mad Scientist” or sorceress, known for her white hair and red clothing.
- Setting: The primary setting is a remote Spanish castle, also known as Accheriod, a place of mystery. The setting expands to include locations like the Alps.
- Conflict: Mortal men who interact with Octavia often fall under her mysterious powers, face horror, and can be transformed.
- Themes and Imagery: The stories include memorable imagery, horror, “metamorphic beings,” and a blend of the “paranormal” with “strange science”. The stories have a retro “pulp fiction” feel, inspired by EC comics and B-movies.
