In the summer of 2020, amidst a global pandemic and racial justice uprisings, three friends with a passion for youth development got together to start Camp Equity. Our idea was simple: harness the power of Zoom to connect like-minded youth from across the country, introduce them to lived-experience grassroots leaders across a variety of social justice movements, and explore how each and every one of us can be a part of creating a better world. In just over one year our programs engaged over 225 third through twelfth graders from over thirty-five states, exploring topics such as Black Lives Matter, Celebrating Queer Culture, Climate Justice, Disability Rights, Indigenous Power, and so much more.
As the world slowly but surely reopens, with soccer practices back in session and play rehearsals once again filling up afternoons, it is clear that the seeds planted at Camp Equity have made a lasting impact on the lives of students who attended a session along with the families and caregivers who listened in from outside the Zoom tile. From becoming activists in their own communities, to giving speeches at rallies, to speaking out more with their friends and teachers, and most importantly, building radical acceptance for the amazing humans they already are, a shift has been made that will last a lifetime.
Even though Camp Equity will host its last session on February 8th, 2022, we have built a body of work since our beginning that we want to share not only with our campers, but with the greater community of social justice warriors (past, current, and future).
With that, we are excited to announce our legacy project, “My Social Justice Dictionary: 100 Words for Young Changemakers.”
Featuring 100 words, terms, and ideas for social change. Written in youth-friendly language, this work includes definitions along with current facts, resources, and suggestions for further study. It is our hope that this dictionary will be a lasting tool in any young person’s arsenal while they work to create an equitable world for all.
As of December 2nd, this project has raised $900 of their $5,000 goal. This project has 40 days left to raise the $5,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $10, you will get one PDF book.
