Beat Saber
Beat Saber is one of the most popular virtual reality games out there and it’s easy to see why once you’ve played it for 5 minutes because it’s so addictive. It’s a music and rhythm game but it’s unlike anything that you’ve seen before. Games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band pioneered the rhythm game genre, challenging players to keep up with the beat and hit buttons on a guitar or drum set in time with the music. The basic concept of Beat Saber is the same but instead of a musical instrument, you’ve got a light sword (basically a lightsaber from Star Wars) and you have to slash through color coded blocks using the correct controller. Obstacles appear from time to time and add another element to the game as you have to duck under them or slide out of the way. The great design and addictive gameplay make this an instant hit with almost anybody that plays it. Just be aware that it’s not the kind of game that you can play sitting down because it’s a very active gaming experience. On the plus side, that does mean that gaming can be good for you if you’re playing active games like Beat Saber and getting some exercise at the same time.
Population: One
This game hasn’t actually been released yet but there’s a lot of buzz around it and it’s looking set to be one of the best virtual reality games to date when it does come out so it deserves a place on the list. To the delight of many fans of the genre, Population: One is the first VR battle royale game that has been developed. The genre has exploded in the last couple of years with the likes of Fortnite and PUBG and since then, every game out there from Call of Duty to Battlefield and even Fallout 76 is introducing their own version of battle royale. Initial play tests of the game seem very promising and there are a lot of battle royale enthusiasts out there eagerly awaiting the release of Population: One later this year. Job Simulator
Job Simulator sounds like the most boring title for a game ever. Gaming is about escapism, after all, you want to be transported to a different world, not simulate your normal working day. But Job Simulator is actually surprisingly fun when you get into it. The game begins in a futuristic office run by robots, giving you various tasks to complete around the office. Trying to navigate the office with your VR headset and controllers is good fun and there are a lot of hilarious mistakes that you’ll make along the way. If you get bored with simulated working, you can always just throw things around the office at your coworkers as well. Job Simulator also comes with a chef and a mechanic level as well and more jobs are likely to be released in future updates. It’s not the most complex virtual reality game on the market and it doesn’t have great replayability value but it’s a good introduction to using the VR headset and having a bit of fun with it.
Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes
One of the main problems with virtual reality games is that they’re not great for playing with friends. Nobody can afford to buy four separate headsets because they’re pretty expensive which means that it’s not a very social experience that you can play with friends like normal gaming. But there is a solution to that problem in the form of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. The player that is wearing the headset has a bomb to defuse and there’s a manual that gives the instructions. The catch is, they can’t see the manual. Instead, the manual is on a website that the other players in the room have access to, but they can’t see the bomb. Each team only has half the information and they have to work together to solve the puzzle.
It’s a great social teamwork experience that is unlike any other virtual reality experience out there right now. If you like to have friends over to play games a lot and you want to incorporate your VR headset, this is the game for you.
