The Internet Archive Got A Lot Cooler With Over 900 Playable Arcade Games

Remember the 1980’s, when the only way you could pay the cool video games meant you had to go down to the local arcade, insert a quarter, and re-insert another quarter when it was game over?  Today, most arcades have been replaced with video game consoles.  But, the popularity of video game consoles did not stop the Internet Archive from creating the Console Living Room, where you can play many games from many classic consoles.  To access it, go to: https://archive.org/details/consolelivingroom

Now, the Internet Archive has brought in many classic arcade games, over 900 of them, and you can play them right on your computer.  The Internet Arcade is a web-based library of arcade (coin-operated) video games from the 1970s through to the 1990s, emulated in JSMAME, part of the JSMESS software package.  Containing hundreds of games ranging through many different genres and styles, the Arcade provides research, comparison, and entertainment in the realm of the Video Game Arcade.  And you don’t need any quarters to play along!  The Internet Arcade is a part of the JSMESS project, where it’s goal is to emulate as many systems as possible.

The game collection ranges from early “bronze-age” videogames, with black and white screens and simple sounds, through to large-scale games containing digitized voices, images, and music. Most games are playable in some form, although some are useful more for verification of behavior or programming due to the intensity and requirements of their systems.  Yeah, it’s not perfect, and there might be some bugs found.  But, this is really cool!  So, if you are bored and looking for something to do, go to The Internet Arcade.  To access it, go to: https://archive.org/details/internetarcade
