It’s been a while since I did a movie review on Geek Alabama. But I did go out to see the first Summer blockbuster that is breaking records! Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr. as the president of Stark Industries and this time he is under attack from the Mandarin. These people use the invention of Extremis for their own evil ways! I am going into detail from the movie below, as always, if you have not seen Iron Man 3 (why not?) SPOILER ALERT!
Iron Man 3 begins at a New Year’s Eve party way back in 1999. Tony Stark is recalling the time he met with scientist Maya Hansen, who is the inventor of Extremis, an experimental regenerative treatment intended to allow recovery from crippling injuries. After some scenes we go back to present day where Tony Stark is having panic attacks. Many of his panic episodes are tracing back to the time in The Avengers Movie where he saved New York City from an alien invasion. Mr. Stark has built many Iron Man suits, but he has never lost his personality! Robert Downey Jr. is funny and always comes up with the right things to say throughout the movie.
Stark Industries security chief Happy Hogan is badly injured in one attack from the Mandarin at the Chinese Theater. This makes Tony Stark not happy, why in the world would he broadcast a televised threat to the Mandarin and broadcast his home address to all the media in the world? That’s right, he wants to be attacked and almost killed. Yes, the Mandarin comes calling and with the use of helicopters, they use bombs to destroy Tony Stark’s home. Much of the home is sent tumbling down into the Pacific Ocean. Tony Stark almost drowned to death as one of his Iron Man suits was not working properly.
The Iron Man suit starts to work properly and flies Tony Stark to rural Tennessee. This is around Christmas time and there is snow on the ground. This is usually not normal for Tennessee or the southeast. The scenes almost looked like you were in Canada. Most of the world believes Tony Stark is dead from the Mandarin attack, but Tony Stark is fine and drags his broken Iron Man suit into town. Tony Stark befriends a 10 year-old boy and starts to investigate the remains of a local explosion bearing the hallmarks of a Mandarin attack. The Mandarin uses Extremis on people to violently blow them up. Yes, too much of this stuff can make you explode! Sadly, the Mandarin are very smart and some people from the group are in town to kill Tony Stark.
After some awesome attack scenes which might be a little too violent for the little ones. Tony Stark destroys the two Mandarin attackers. The town is not too lucky as many buildings are damaged and the town’s water tower is taken down. With Harley’s help, Stark traces the Mandarin to Miami Florida and infiltrates his headquarters using improvised weapons. By the way, I liked the performance of Harley or actor Ty Simpkins. I am sure we will be seeing more of him in future movies and TV shows!
Tony Stark arrives in Miami and finds that the Mandarin are using a British actor named Trevor Slattery as the terrorist. Sure, this actor does a fine job shooting people in the head on live TV. This actor also loves his women as well! The actor is oblivious to the actions carried out in his name and is only there to tell the world what the Mandarin tells him. The Mandarin captures Stark and lures Col. James Rhodes being played by Don Cheadle into a trap. James Rhodes is the Iron Patriot, which is basically the Iron Man suit developed by the U.S. Government.
Stark is tied up and Killian reveals he is the true Mandarin; he has kidnapped Potts and subjected her to Extremis to gain Stark’s aid in fixing Extremis’ flaws and thereby saving Pepper. Sadly, Killian kills Hansen when she has a change of heart about the plan. This is another rough scene which might be too much for the little ones. Yeah, lots of killing with guns and people blowing up are in this movie. Rhodes and Stark reunites and finds out that Killian intends to attack President Ellis aboard Air Force One. Here comes a really awesome part of the movie!
Tony Stark has developed technology where he can remotely control his Iron Man suits. And it comes in handy during this part of the movie. Killian attacks Air Force One and takes the president. Quite a few Secret Service agents are killed by Killian. Then the rest of the passengers that are alive are sucked out before Air Force One explodes. Iron Man uses a pretty cool technique to catch all the falling passengers by holding hands. The passengers are saved but the Iron Man suit is destroyed when a truck hits it. A lesson for us all, never go in front of moving traffic!
Killian is traced to an impounded damaged oil tanker where Killian intends to kill President Ellis on live television. Then the Mandarin’s plans are revealed! The vice president will become a puppet leader, following Killian’s orders in exchange for Extremis to cure his daughter’s disability. Tony Stark comes up with a very creative plan to save the president and to end the treats from Killian and the Mandarin. Tony calls all of his Iron Man suits controlled by JARVIS to attack the Mandarin! Then the battle begins with a Christmas Tree in the background. I thought the crew could have done better with the Christmas themes.
James Rhodes rescues the president and the Iron Patriot suit and flies away with the president to safety. Tony Stark and Iron Man has an impressive battle with Killian who will just won’t die! During the battle scenes, Virginia Potts falls to her apparent death after surviving the Extremis procedure. Tony Stark finally kills Killian with the help of Potts who is still alive after falling into the fire! Tony Stark has grown to be tired of the Iron Man way of life. So he ordered JARVIS to destroy all Iron Man suits! He is doing this to devote more time to Potts, the guy really needs a love life!
The vice president and Trevor Slattery are arrested and Tony Stark has surgery to remove the shrapnel embedded near his heart. Potts Extremis effects are stabilized, and Stark throws the obsolete chest arc reactor into the sea, musing he will always be Iron Man. By the way, stay all the way through the credits, yes even after all the credits like songs and special thanks are through to see a bonus scene where Tony Stark is at Dr. Bruce Banner. At the end, the message pops up saying “Tony Stark will return.” I really do believe we will see Robert Downey Jr. be Iron Man again.
I really liked the performance of actor Robert Downey Jr. in this movie. I thought this was his best performance in his acting career. I also liked the performance of actor Don Cheadle! He really added some great things to Iron Man 3! The women actors in the movie like Rebecca Hall and Gwyneth Paltrow were great and it was a great change from average superhero movies where women are shown as people who don’t do anything. These women kicked butt and did some great things in Iron Man 3. So far, Iron Man 3 is breaking box office records and that’s great! Because this movie was wickedly good! I encourage all of you to go see Iron Man 3! It’s worth your time!
