The 10th annual Free Comic Book Day is coming up on Saturday May 4th.  And on the same day is Star Wars Day!  May the 4th be with you!  Many comic book shops all across the country will be giving away free comic books to anyone who wants them.  In NE Alabama; Dragon Quills in Gadsden and FCB Games & Comics in Oxford are participating.  Over in NW Georgia; OtherWorld Games in Dallas is participating!  In Huntsville; The Deep Comics & Games are participating!  Over in the Atlanta Metro; Criminal Records, Book Nook, Oxford Comics and Games, Book End, Teahouse Comics, Titan Games and Comics, FCB Games & Comics, and Odins are participating!  And over in the Birmingham Metro; Bob’s Comics, Legion, and Kingdom Comics are participating!

If you go to Kingdom Comics on Saturday May 4th, you are in for a treat!  Along with the free comics, you will see guest artists such as Geoffrey Gwin from High Noon Studios, Andy Gray from Avatar Comics and James Hill from BlueWater Comics.  Several people in costumes from many geek genres like Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Batman and Robin, Captain America, Darth Vader, and many more superheroes will be present for photo opportunities.  People from the Alabama Phoenix Festival will also be present.  Since it’s also Star Wars Day, there will be many Star Wars characters coming out as well!

The reason why Free Comic Book Day got started is to encourage more people to pick up a comic book!  This event celebrates the independent comic book specialty shops, thousands of which exist in North America alone.  Each one is unique in its community, with a style and personality all its own, and each one carries a full line of comics, graphic novels, toys and related products.

Comic books began in the 1930s as a unique American art form that has grown – like so many American forms of entertainment – to spread around the globe.  From Japanese businessmen reading manga on the subways of Tokyo to French artists re-interpreting Proust with words and pictures, comics have changed entertainment and challenged perceptions. These days, there are comic books for every taste, from slam-bang super-hero adventures and thoughtful slice-of-life to thrilling science fiction and intense drama.

If it’s been a while since you’ve read a comic book, prepare to be pleasantly surprised by the breadth of variety available!  Learn more about the comic book at: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/986?articleID=116110
