Did you know trains used to run on the Bay Bridge? Bob Simon of the Western Railway Museum in Solano County showed us one of their old bridge units that they’ve kept running.
The Key System ran the trains until 1958 when car lanes replaced the tracks on the bridge. Construction on BART officially began in 1964 with the system opening in 1972 between Fremont and MacArthur stations. The Transbay Tube opened two years later in 1974, once again connecting the Bay area with rail rapid transit.
