Welcome to the Animation Monday segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Animation Monday will feature stuff from the animation and cartoon worlds. Animation has become an extremely popular format in today’s media driven world. And we here at Geek Alabama love to feature animation content!

For a few years in the late ’90s, ABC didn’t just air cartoons on Saturday morning — it built an entire world around them.

Disney’s One Saturday Morning gave us Recess, Pepper Ann, Doug, The Weekenders, bizarre comedy shorts, live hosts, a CGI elephant, and one of the most unforgettable Saturday morning intros of the era. It was bright, ambitious, strange, and for a while, it actually worked. ABC managed to climb past Fox Kids and create one of the strongest identities in children’s television.

But then something changed.

The elaborate virtual building disappeared. The hosts vanished. The shorts were cut. The block that once felt like an actual destination slowly became just another lineup of shows — and within a few years, One Saturday Morning was gone.

In this video, we take a deep dive into the rise and fall of Disney’s One Saturday Morning, how it was created, why it connected with so many kids, how Pokémon and the changing world of cable television reshaped Saturday mornings, and why Disney ultimately moved away from the very concept that had made the block so special.

Was One Saturday Morning simply a victim of changing times, or did Disney help kill its own creation?
