The Wichita Falls tornado of April 10, 1979 didn’t kill because the warning failed. It killed because the warning worked, and people got in their cars. Of the 42 people who died in the city, 25 died in and around vehicles. Sixteen of them had left a building to outrun the storm, and eleven of the sixteen homes they fled were never damaged.
