Could satellites transform railway signalling and eventually replace some of the equipment installed along the track?
In this video, we explore how GNSS—Global Navigation Satellite Systems such as GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou—could change the way trains are located, monitored and controlled.
Traditional railways rely on track circuits, axle counters, balises, onboard odometry and other infrastructure to determine where trains are. These systems are reliable, but they are also expensive to install and maintain, particularly on regional and low-traffic railway lines.
Satellite-based train positioning could provide continuous information about a train’s location, speed and direction. When combined with digital track maps, odometry, inertial sensors, ETCS and future railway communication systems such as FRMCS, GNSS could support more accurate traffic management, virtual balises, freight tracking, work-zone protection and future moving-block operation.
However, using satellite navigation for safety-critical railway applications is far more complicated than simply putting GPS on a train. Tunnels, mountains, station roofs, parallel tracks, signal reflections, jamming and spoofing can all affect positioning. Railway systems must therefore provide not only accuracy, but also availability, continuity and integrity.
So, can satellites really replace trackside railway signals—or will GNSS become another layer within a wider digital railway safety system?
