Copper powers the modern world.
From the electrical grid and renewable energy to your phone, your car, and your home, nearly everything around us depends on this incredible metal. But how do we turn ordinary rock into 99.9% pure copper?
To find out, we traveled to First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi Mine in Zambia—one of Africa’s largest copper operations. Unlike most mines, Kansanshi mines, concentrates, smelts, and refines its copper all in one place, giving us the rare opportunity to follow the entire process from start to finish.
