Welcome to the Good News Fridays segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Good News Fridays will feature something good, wholesome, positive, and overall something great. After a long and stressful week, we all need something good to read or watch on Fridays! Enjoy a heartwarming post below!
Birmingham has a way of surprising you. We started on top of Red Mountain, watching the sun fall behind the Vulcan. A local woman named Judy stopped beside us. She knew every thread of this place. Iron ore, steel, furnaces, mines cut into the red earth. She spoke like someone who had lived the history rather than read it. I’ll always choose a conversation with someone like Judy over any museum display. Real history has a heartbeat.
From there, we wandered down into Five Points South. That warm, amber hour where a neighborhood feels like it’s breathing. A Spanish-style church with a fountain in front. French, Italian, Latin restaurants sitting shoulder to shoulder. Places filled with people living their Friday night, not performing it. It hits you how different this is from the headlines and the warnings. All you ever hear is crime statistics or tired clichés. But here, people laugh with bartenders, clink glasses with old friends, and eat food cooked by someone who cares.
We tried to keep up. Dave’s Pub. El Barrio. Paramount Bar. House of Found Objects. And finally Mom’s Basement. By that point the wheels were off. Cheap Twisted Teas in a 70s basement bar will do that to you. We were gone. But happy gone. The kind that comes from being welcomed somewhere new.
If you made it past the El Barrio section, I’m sorry for how things derailed from there. But I hope you enjoyed the ride. This is Birmingham, one of our favourite cities in the world.
