Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment! Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as, Indiegogo, and others. The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal. Please enjoy today’s featured project!

The Kifaru Conservation Drones Campaign is a collaborative initiative led by the ZEITZ foundation to protect critically endangered Eastern Black Rhinos in Kenya using cutting-edge drone technology.
In June 2025, the Foundation successfully completed the translocation of a founding population of Eastern Black Rhinos to Segera Conservancy, returning them to their ancestral land for the first time in 60 years. This achievement restores these animals to a key part of their historical range and marks an essential step toward their long-term survival.
But our work doesn’t stop with the translocation. We now need to ensure these rhinos can truly thrive through round-the-clock protection and monitoring. By supporting this campaign, you’ll help us create and sustain a dedicated drone ranger unit at Segera Conservancy—equipped to deter poaching, monitor the rhinos, and contribute to a safe secure habitat for these majestic animals. This drone unit will also be essential as we’re preparing to bring White Rhinos through a second translocation to Segera later this year.
Kenya’s recent rhino conservation journey has succeeded in pulling the Eastern Black Rhino back from the brink of extinction, growing the population from fewer than 400 in 1985 to 1,000 in 2024. However, this success is threatened by a shortage of suitable habitat for feeding, breeding, and protection from poaching. Without immediate action to establish new sanctuaries and expand their range, this hard-won recovery is at risk.
That’s why this campaign matters. By supporting our wildlife rangers and providing them with advanced technology, you’re helping create a future where rhinos can thrive in a secure, healthy landscape.
This is part of a bigger vision to establish one of the world’s largest interconnected rhino sanctuaries, spanning up to 840,000 acres and supporting Kenya’s goal of a sustainable meta-population of at least 2,000 Eastern African Black Rhinos living freely in secure habitats.
As of September 15th, this project has raised $4,500 of their $50,000 goal. This project has 48 days left to raise the $50,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $5, you will get a personalized thank you. For a pledge of $25, you will get a Kenyan poem.
