A hidden comic collection of over 300,000 books was kept a family secret for 40 years. Darren’s father Dale was an obsessive genius. His obsession — the comic collection — was fueled by his Asperger’s (ASD), and it progressively overtook the home, put strain on his marriage, and it continues to bruise his family, even after his passing. Darren is now left with the collection, which includes the prized possession of his father: SUPERMAN (7.0). Valued at over $3.5 million, it is one of the most valuable comic books of all time.

Only now do we have exclusive access to unravel this story to the public, and we need your help to tell it! Selling Superman is an upcoming documentary that follows director and producer Adam Schomer’s friend Darren as he contemplates selling his father’s prized possession, picking up the pieces of his childhood and rewriting a family legacy. Will he discover the heroic power we all have inside – that of choosing what we assign value to? We’re already filming on-site across the United States, but we’re looking to YOU to help us finish filming and look toward post-production. Will you join us?

WHY TELL THIS STORY?

Selling Superman uses the  incredibly powerful and popular world of comic collecting  to explore a story of discovery, healing, and neuro-divergence, which includes:

HEALING THE BOND BETWEEN  FATHER AND  SON: Overcoming a fractious relationship between a father and his son, we contemplate self-value and going beyond parental conditioning to define one’s own life story.

FINDING TRUE MEANING & VALUE: From the economics of scarcity, to crypto, to commodification vs authenticity, this story mirrors the real economic impact of valuation in many of our lives.

NAVIGATING MENTAL HEALTH: Darren’s father lived with undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) whose complex effects on his family are still being untangled. But through a concerted effort to re-engage in his father’s legacy, Darren’s family looks toward closure and happiness.

THE UNDRESSING OF ARCHETYPES: Lets rip off the costume and look at why we love Superman and Super Heroes. What are Villains? Do we need Saviors? And what impact do these stories have on the of the inner psyche of all members of society?

BATMAN vs SUPERMAN: Who would win? Just checking to see if you are reading… or am I? I mean, we can’t get too heavy in the film after all… its comics!

As of November 4th, this project has raised $4,100 of their $125,000 goal. This project has 13 days left to raise the $125,000 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $10, you will get project updates.  For a pledge of $25, you will get a virtual screening of the film.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1861948680/selling-superman?
