My name is Josie Mott, I have been adapting books for many years to meet speech-language goals in therapy sessions. I have found that many of the books geared towards toddlers are too long, for most little ones with language delays, and do not keep their attention. Instead of reading the words, I would make up my own, to tell a simple story that was relatable to the child.
I also developed a way to encourage the child to participate, by using the phrase: “You tell __.” to have them tell the character in the book something- which they loved to do! They began to feel empowered to be able to “tell” someone something. It was a way to give them a turn and they could respond with a gesture, a facial expression, pointing, etc. I found a way to keep them engaged that was fun and interactive.
Seeing how this phrase worked so well and had such a positive impact, made me want to empower more children in this way. Looking at a book has become one of the most productive parts of my sessions and I want other therapists to feel this way about using a book in their sessions. I also want parents to be able to read a story, just the way it is written, and discover how they can keep their children engaged, as well as encourage their participation.
I am excited about this project which will be a book for all toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy, but also a therapeutic material to be used by speech therapists and parents for building communication skills.
