“Carta Marina” is a 16th century map of Scandinavia by Swedish priest Olaus Magnus, printed from nine original plates measuring 55 x 40 centimeters, which together make one large map of the Nordic region measuring 1.25 meters long by 1.7 meters wide. “Carta Marina” is also said to be the first map with detailed topography and place names of the Nordic region, and there are currently only 2 complete copies of all nine in existence in the world.

What made me decide to create this game…. It was at a bookstore. It was a nautical chart of the 9th century. When I saw it, I was shocked! It vividly depicted the sea monsters that people of that time envisioned, and there were many creatures that do not exist today. Those medieval people are great inspirations! Then a greater inspiration awaited me. That was my encounter with the Nordic map “Carta Marina”, which is also the title of this game. I was dying to make a game out of them. I wanted to convey to as many people as possible the fascination of the monsters that people imagined and feared at the time, and the environment and values of the 16th century that gave birth to them. I thought that a game, which is both a recording medium and a hands-on experience, would be the best way to do this. I then set about the task of gathering members. It was a challenge, but I had the opportunity to gather a great team of people, and we had the chance to create the “Carta Marina” game that I had dreamed of.

We will create a simulation game based on “Carta Marina”, using only the knowledge rooted in Scandinavia in the 16th century! In the future, we aim to refine our knowledge and collaborate with educational institutions, such as universities, where the game will be used.” We are looking for cooperation from university institutions and individuals who are familiar with “Carta Marina”! If you are interested in supervising this game, we are sincerely looking for your cooperation!

As of September 26th, this project has raised $9,800 of their $6,974 goal.
